Learning to build a sounder P6 schedule

Schedule Mentor is written for planners who are still building confidence. The habits it helps you spot and fix

Open ends — activities missing a predecessor or successor, which break the critical-path calculation.

Hard constraints — fixed dates that override the logic and mask true float.

Negative lag (leads) — relationships that let work start before its predecessor sensibly allows.

Excessive total float — a sign of missing or incomplete logic rather than genuine flexibility.

Out-of-sequence progress and long durations — symptoms that the plan no longer reflects how the work will run.

Why it matters

These are the faults that quietly make a forecast unreliable long before anyone notices the completion date is wrong. Learning to recognise and correct them is the difference between a schedule that merely draws bars and one that can actually predict.
