What is an XER file?

An XER file is the standard export format of Oracle Primavera P6, the scheduling tool used on most major construction, infrastructure and engineering programmes. It contains the whole schedule, activities, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), logic links, dates, durations, float and the critical path, as tab-delimited text.

Who this viewer is for

Clients, main contractors, subcontractors, quantity surveyors and lawyers who have been sent an XER and don’t have, or don’t want to learn, Primavera P6. Drop the file, read the programme, find what you need, and print it.

What it shows

A two-pane Gantt: the activity grid and WBS on the left, the bar chart on the right. Start and finish dates, original and remaining durations, total float, percent complete and status, the critical path in red, milestones as diamonds, and the logic links between activities.

What it doesn’t do

This is a read-only viewer. It does not edit the schedule, re-schedule or re-calculate the critical path, and it does not change your file in any way. It shows what the planner calculated in P6.

Frequently asked questions

Is my schedule uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened and parsed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. It is never sent to a server, never stored, and never leaves your device. Close the tab and it’s gone.

Do I need Primavera installed?

No. You need nothing but a modern web browser. That’s the point, this is for people without a P6 licence.

Which XER versions are supported?

XER files from Primavera P6 versions across the last ~15 years (roughly v6 through v23) use the same tab-delimited structure and are supported. Very old or corrupted files may show a clear error.

Can I print it?

Yes, printing a Gantt is a first-class feature here. Choose A4/A3, orientation, a date range and columns, then print to PDF. Free viewers usually fail at this; this one is built for it.

What about XML or MPP files?

This viewer reads Primavera .xer files. Primavera .xml (P6 XML) support is a planned addition. Microsoft Project .mpp files are a different format and are not supported.
